NAADS begins the distribution of seeds across the country
NAADS has commenced the distribution of planting materials across the country in preparation for the upcoming season that is expected this month of August 2020. NAADS together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries has been mobilizing and preparing farmers for the planting season that is yet to begin.
In this season, NAADS is set to supply the following planting materials;
Food security: maize, beans, vegetables, cassava, Irish potatoes, sorghum, and sweet potatoes
Strategic Commodities: Pineapples, apples, mangoes, citrus (oranges) and tea
In order to ensure food security in the country, NAADS is distributing improved planting materials to farmers in the district local governments for the major food staple crops for the respective regions of the country, particularly those of quick maturing nature, notably maize and beans, as well as cassava, sweet potatoes, and Irish potato.
NAADS will distribute1,698,529 kilograms of maize across all the districts with the exception of Maracha district that did not request for maize seed. Most of the districts are also receiving bean seed. Like maize, whereas beans are predominantly a staple food crop, they are also an important cash crop contributing to household incomes & national export earnings.
Other planting materials for food security being distributed include vegetables, cassava, Irish potatoes, sorghum and sweet potatoes. The vegetables are part of the Government’s food security response as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic.
