NAADS donates 2 Farm tractors to King Oyo’s Model Farm

Government through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries under the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) has donated two farm tractors to a model farm belonging to the King of Tooro Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru.

The farm located in Bugaaki sub county in Kyenjojo district was established by King Oyo to work as a model to the people of Tooro especially the youth interested in farming that will use it to learn modern ways of farming. It has nine enterprises where farmers especially the small holder come to learn modern ways of earning from agriculture. The enterprises include livestock, mainly cows and goats, mangoes, bananas, vegetables, fish farming, coffee, poultry among others.

The Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Frank Tumwebaze accompanied by the Executive Director NAADS Dr. Samuel Mugasi toured the farm to establish how Government can partner with the King to mobilize farmers and promote commercial agriculture.

Speaking to his guests, King Oyo encouraged the youth to emulate him and take up agriculture as a source of income instead of spending a lot of time in politics. He also appealed to other cultural institutions to set up model farms for training farmers in profitable commercial agriculture.

Minister Tumwebaze said his ministry through its agencies seeks to partner with such demonstration centres that will help to disseminate and popularize agriculture research information. He added that once the model commercial farms are supported, they become anchor markets and through the ministry supports other small farmers.

Dr. Mugasi said apart from the farm tractors, NAADS will continue to work closely with the model farm to ensure that they receive the necessary support.
