Tea Growing Guide

Tea (Camellia sinensis) is a perennial beverage as well cash crop. Tea is among the top five agricultural export commodities, with total earnings of US$ 89 million which places it in the fourth position following coffee, fish, and maize. The tea sub-sector has an annual contribution of 3.6% to Uganda’s export earnings. The total annual tea production is approximately 81,000 mt, which accounts for 1.5 percent of total world production. The sub-sector has enormous potential for expansion from 44,000 ha in 2018 to 200,000 ha if fully exploited. In addition, the industry generates between 60,000 and 80,000 direct jobs and an estimated one million indirectly. Tea is the 2nd most consumed beverage in the world, after water, offering Uganda a business opportunity in a very established market and human and entrenched lifestyle
