COMMON DISEASES IN CALVES

1. Navel ill (joint ill)

• Umbilical region inflamed
• Swollen joints
• Can be managed by dressing the umbilicus with antiseptic at birth and maintaining good hygiene.

2. Calf scours (calf diarrhea)

• Dirty tail
• Diarrhea that may contain blood
• Loss of weight
• Slow movement
• Can be managed by first treating the diarrhea and rehydrating the calf with fluids, electrolytes and nutrients
• Contact a veterinarian

3. Helminths

• Poor body condition
• Starring coat
• Pot belly
• Can be managed by deworming calves regularly at the beginning of the rains

4. Calf pneumonia

• Sneezing and coughing
• Difficult breathing
• Can be managed by providing clean, airy and uncrowded conditions.
